A brother is to help you, arms are to hug with, and a hole, of course, is to dig. A Hole Is to Dig is Ruth Krauss's picture book of first definitions, illustrated by Maurice Sendak and first published in 1952. Gathered from real children, its ideas find a companion in Sendak's black-and-white drawings of kids digging, hugging, and making faces. This edition was printed in close collaboration with the Maurice Sendak Foundation to reproduce the original artwork faithfully. A little book for reading together, lingering over the drawings, and coming up with a few definitions of your own.
